Legislators visit Illinois farms

U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky visits Golden Oaks Farm

Until a couple years ago, U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky’s district included only Cook County.

 

Now in her 13th term, the Democrat from Evanston represents more rural areas and farmers in Lake and McHenry counties.

 

To help acquaint herself with issues facing producers, Schakowsky spent two hours at Golden Oaks Farm in Lake County on Oct. 8, touring the dairy facilities as well as the farm’s sister company, Midwest Organics Recycling.

 

Aside from petting cows, taking a tractor ride through the expansive grounds, touring the milk parlor and even driving a tractor, Schakowsky talked with Lake and Cook County Farm Bureau members about their hopes for a farm bill this year, as well as other challenges, including those faced by young and beginning farmers.

U.S. Rep. Sean Casten visits Cook County Greenhouse

Three months ago, Rebecca Biernacki made her first face-to-face connection with her congressman, Sean Casten.

 

Her family’s greenhouse in Cook County has been around for decades, but labor, transportation and production costs continue to eat away at revenue.

She shared these concerns with Casten, D-Downers Grove, during a July Leaders to Washington trip organized by Illinois Farm Bureau.

 

On Oct. 4, Biernacki and Casten met on her turf — her family’s greenhouse, so Casten could see firsthand how the operation works to better understand the family’s challenges.
